Trinidad and Tobago will have to learn to treat with the Huanglongbing (Citrus Greening) disease as eradication is neither a feasible nor economical option. This was the view of Florida University’s Head of the Citrus Research & Education Centre – Professor Michael Rogers – at the de-briefing session of a Citrus Greening Workshop on Tuesday 7th November, 2017. The Workshop, which was hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries (MALF) in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (USDA-APHIS-IS), took place at the Ministry’s corporate headquarters in Chaguanas. Huanglongbing or Citrus Greening disease has had negative economic implications for Trinidad and Tobago since its positive identification in May of this year. These were the words of Senator Avinash Singh, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, as he shared the sentiments of citrus farmers with whom he had had recent discussions on the disease – caused by the bacterium, Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus – which has destroyed more than 100 million trees globally and has spread to several continents (Asia, Africa and the Indian subcontinent) including the Americas. Senator Avinash Singh, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries (MALF), says that the Ministry has agreed to the allocation of some $400,000 to the 4-H Clubs in Trinidad and Tobago with the likelihood of an increase during the fiscal year, once needed. Some seven hundred and thirteen (713) agriculture and fisheries stakeholders are set to receive their relief cheques, which commenced on Friday 27th October, 2017 at the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries’ new Head Office Building with twenty-two farmers among the first to receive their cheques, representing the counties of Caroni, Nariva/Mayaro, St Patrick (East), St. Andrew/St. David, St. George East, St. George West, and County Victoria.

The Fisheries and Forestry Divisions of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries participated in the Lakshmi Girls Hindu College Science Fair at the school’s compound in St Augustine.
