January 26th, 2024:- In a proactive move to protect our vital solanaceous crops, particularly tomatoes, the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries issues an urgent call to farmers, stakeholders, and the public to unite against the relentless tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta. Solanaceous crops are a group of plants that belong to the Solanaceae family. The family includes a number of agricultural crops, medicinal plants, spices, weeds, and ornamentals. As a leader in agricultural innovation, the Ministry is spearheading the implementation of comprehensive measures to combat this menace and secure our agricultural future.
Over the last decade, Tuta absoluta has emerged as a significant global threat, infesting 60% of tomato crops worldwide. In 2022, this formidable adversary reached our shores in Trinidad, prompting immediate action from the Ministry. In 2023, our Research Division, in alignment with the vision of Senator the Honourable Kazim Hosein, Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, implemented an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan, incorporating innovative strategies such as surveillance and pheromone mass trapping.
Senator the Honourable Kazim Hosein, emphasizes, “In the face of challenges, the Ministry remains steadfast in its commitment to the resilience and sustainability of our agricultural sector. The threat posed by Tuta absoluta requires a unified response, and we urge farmers and the public to join us in implementing the recommended strategies. Our collective efforts can overcome this agricultural menace, ensuring the continued prosperity of our tomato crops and safeguarding the livelihoods of our farming communities.”
We urge farmers to remain vigilant as we enter the dry season, closely monitoring their fields for any signs of Tuta absoluta resurgence. The Ministry recommends the adoption of proven Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to safeguard crops and ensure sustainable agricultural practices.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Strategies Include:
Public Awareness Campaigns: Farmer training sessions, virtual digital recordings, flyers, posters, brochures, factsheets.
Cultural Practices: Crop rotation, field sanitation.
Pheromone Trapping & Chemical Control: Refer to attachments for detailed guidelines.
Natural Enemy Identification: Ongoing scouting for natural enemies.
Monitoring and Surveillance Activities: Continuous efforts to stay informed.
Knowledge is Power: Refer to the attached guidelines for effective management and control of Tuta absoluta. Understanding the outlined strategies is paramount in combating this threat. Early detection is critical, and farmers are encouraged to seek assistance from the nearest MALF County Office if any signs of Tuta absoluta infestations are observed.
In the face of challenges, collective efforts can triumph over this agricultural menace. Let’s unite to protect our tomato crops, ensuring food security and sustaining our agricultural communities.

In 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries (MALF) achieved a pivotal milestone by distributing approximately 200,000 lbs of high-yielding, disease-resistant rice seeds to thirty (30) farmers. The seeds were purchased from the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) and forms a part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago in July 2022.
Minister Kazim Hosein praised the initiative as a testament to CARICOM member states’ commitment to reducing the food import bill by 25% by 2025, “Our counterparts in Guyana, under the leadership of the Honourable Zulfikar Mustapha, are continuing to work with us. This initiative would not have come about had it not been for the commitment of our Honourable Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley, and his discussions with the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali.”

As we observe World Soil Day this 5th of December 2023, we pause to acknowledge and appreciate the profound significance of soil and water, the silent custodians of life on our planet. This year’s theme, “Soil and Water – A Source of Life”, could not be more fitting, as it encapsulates the essence of their indispensable role in our existence and prosperity.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries has been steadfast in its commitment to safeguard and sustainably manage these life-giving resources. Through the dedicated efforts of our Research Division’s Soil and Land Capability Unit and our Engineering Division, we have been empowering our farming community with knowledge and tools for sustainable soil management and efficient water use.
The recent modernization of our Soil and Analytical Services Laboratory has significantly bolstered our ability to conduct chemical analyses of soil and water, thereby enabling more informed decision-making in their management. We’ve also made headway in constructing water management structures, providing technical advice for on-farm buildings and waste disposal systems and improving the desilting of our drainage and irrigation channels.
However, our journey does not end here. This World Soil Day, we recommit ourselves to the cause of preserving the integrity of our soil and water. We pledge to continue our efforts in promoting sustainable practices, advancing agricultural innovation and raising awareness in our communities about the importance of these resources.
Our soil and water are more than just resources – they are the heartbeat of our Earth, the pulse of life. For the generations that will follow us, it is our duty to ensure these resources continue to thrive and sustain life.
Today, let’s not only celebrate our progress, but also acknowledge the path that lies ahead. We are all stewards of this Earth and together, we can ensure a future where our soils are healthy, our waters are clean and our agriculture is prosperous.
Thank you for standing with us on this journey towards a more sustainable future.
Best regards,
Senator the Honourable Kazim Hosein
Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries.
