MAF Reinforces Commitment to Food Security at World Food Day 2026 Commemoration

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries joined the World Food Day National Committee of Trinidad and Tobago (WFDNCTT) today to commemorate World Food Day 2026 under the theme “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.”, highlighting the importance of innovation, increased local food production and sustainable food systems in strengthening national food and nutrition security.

The day’s proceedings commenced with an official ceremony followed by a commemorative canistel tree-planting ceremony, at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Port of Spain. The activities brought together stakeholders to recognise the importance of agriculture and the collective efforts required to build a more resilient food system for Trinidad and Tobago.

The planting of the canistel tree symbolised the importance of environmental stewardship, the preservation of valuable local fruit crops and the need to safeguard agricultural resources for future generations. The activity also highlighted opportunities to promote greater appreciation and consumption of locally grown produce as part of the country’s broader food security objectives.

In his address, Senator the Honourable Ravi Ratiram, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, emphasised that innovation, investment and collaboration are essential to increasing domestic food production, reducing dependence on imported food and creating sustainable opportunities across the agricultural sector. He stated, “Food security is national security. A country that can feed itself stands on firmer ground in uncertain times, whether we face global supply disruptions, rising prices or the growing impacts of climate change.”

The Minister also highlighted key initiatives aimed at strengthening the sector, including the Public Fruit and Food Orchards Initiative, which is expected to expand to the Queen’s Park Savannah, schools, housing developments and other public spaces. He further noted the proposed expansion of the Agricultural Internship Programme from 30 to 100 interns, aimed at exposing more young people to opportunities in agricultural production, agro-processing, research and technology. These initiatives form part of broader efforts to increase local food availability, encourage innovation and build capacity for the future of agriculture.

Minister Ratiram welcomed the students and members of the 4-H Clubs participating in the day’s celebrations and encouraged them to explore the many opportunities available in modern agriculture, including innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable agribusiness. He underscored the importance of engaging young people in agricultural education and equipping them with the knowledge and skills to contribute to the future of food production in Trinidad and Tobago.

In delivering her remarks, Ms. Shivanna Ramraj, Chairman of the WFDNCTT, highlighted the significance of World Food Day in raising awareness of food and nutrition security and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders. She also emphasised the importance of continued public engagement and collective action in promoting sustainable food systems and encouraging greater appreciation for agriculture and locally produced foods.

Also in attendance were senior officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism, and 4-H Trinidad and Tobago. Their participation reflected the collaborative efforts of government agencies and partner organisations in advancing agricultural development, youth engagement and national food and nutrition security.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries continues to work with farmers, fisherfolk, researchers, agro-processors, educational institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen local food production, advance sustainable agricultural practices and improve national food and nutrition security. Through continued investment, innovation and collaboration, the Ministry remains committed to building a more resilient agricultural sector and a sustainable, food-secure future for Trinidad and Tobago.
